Test Your Connection To Data393

Data393 provides a premium network for our colocation, managed hosting and connectivity customers. To see what your connectivity to our data center is like from your location and get a general idea of performance, we have provided a Flash based speed test for your use.

Interpreting Your Speed Test Results

There are many factors that can impact your results from your speed test.

  • What does this speed test measure?

This speed test measures the throughput you are able to achieve from a server in Data393's Denver data center to your computer. This is done by a Flash module that is run from your computer browser.

The speed test will provide you with the results of upload, download and ping to the server in Data393's facility.

  • What must I have to run the speed test?

The speed test is a Flash based module that will run in any browser that supports Flash 7 and above. Javascript is also used to detect your Flash player. If you are experiencing problems running the speed test, please ensure that Javascript is enabled and that you are running Flash Player version 7 or higher. Windows Vista users may need to download the Flash Player ActiveX Control in order for the Flash animation to work properly.

  • I think my speeds should be faster. What could be the problem?

Performing speed tests on servers that are closer to your location will almost always result in better performance when compared to distant servers. This is due to the fact that the TCP window, and the HTTP transfer that is used in Data393's speed test, is not optimized for the latency increase that occurs with increased distance between points.

  • What is a TCP window?

HTTP is technically bound by the TCP "congestion window" which determines how many packets can be sent at one time. The larger the window size, the higher the throughput. Latency is also directly affected by this since slower responses will create delays between packet sends.

  • What is ping and how is it measured with this speed test?

Ping within the speed test is measured differently than if you would conduct a ping test from a command line using ICMP. Data393's speed test measures the time it takes to get a response for an HTTP request sent to the server. The number will be higher than an ICMP ping, but it will give you a relative value in tandem with the other tests.
